Gear racks, slide rails and mounting arms for an Arduino mini CNC plotter

This is the printed part set for an Arduino mini CNC plotter, a small drawing machine that moves a pen across paper. PrototypeBD printed the plastic parts shown here.

What is in the set

  • Slide rails: three long channel rails with screw holes and mounting ears at the ends.
  • Gear racks: three straight racks with fine teeth, each joined to a base block with a curved saddle.
  • Pinion gear: a small spur gear that meshes with the racks.
  • Clamps and links: half-round clamps, a half-disc cam and small offset bushings.

What matters in parts like these

Racks and pinions only run smoothly when the teeth are evenly spaced and the rails are straight. Long, thin parts like these rails can warp if a print is not set up well. In the photos the racks are straight, the teeth are sharp and evenly formed, and the rails lie flat.
