Museum of Modern Literature, Marbach: 1:300 study model with stepped terrain (BUET)

This is a study model of the Museum of Modern Literature (Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach) in Germany, designed by David Chipperfield Architects. Imtiaz Uddin of BUET made the model as an architectural study, and the post says the model was fabricated with PrototypeBD's 3D printing and CNC cutting services.

The terrain

The museum sits on a slope above a river valley, so the ground matters as much as the building. Here the hillside is built from thin sheets cut to the contour lines and stacked, so the slope rises in clean steps. In the top view the contours sweep around the building on both sides, and the base is made in two halves that open along a section line.

The building

  • 3D printed in one light material, with the slender columns of the colonnade printed as separate thin posts;
  • split along the section line, so each half shows the rooms and floor levels inside;
  • a plain block for the neighbouring building at the back of the site.

Pulled apart, the two halves read like a drawn section; pushed together, they show the whole building in its landscape.

Model making: Imtiaz Uddin (BUET); 3D printing and CNC cutting: PrototypeBD.
