PrototypeBD 3D printed this model of Hagia Sophia, built as a cathedral in 537 AD and later used as a mosque and a museum. The aim was a display piece that shows the structure's shape clearly from every side.
What the model shows
- the large central dome, with the ring of small windows around its base picked out as a row of bumps;
- the half-domes and smaller domes stepping down from the centre;
- heavy buttress blocks along the sides;
- four tall, thin minarets, one at each corner of the base.
Printing tall, thin details
The minarets are the hard part. They are tall, very slender and stand alone at the corners, so they must print straight without wobbling or stringing. The domes, meanwhile, curve over open space and need a clean surface on top. A single white colour keeps the model reading as one sculpted mass, much like an architect's study model.
Painting and custom sizes are available on request.
