This is a wall lamp in the shape of the full moon. The face of the lamp is a 3D printed relief of the lunar surface: large basins, crater rims and thousands of small impact pits stand up from a flat disc.
From grey print to finished lamp
The photos follow the build. The relief comes off the printers in plain grey, and the joins between printed sections are still visible as fine lines. It is then painted with black and white acrylic: the white is dry-brushed over the high points so the crater rims catch the light and the hollows stay dark. A strip of LEDs and a dark ring frame turn the disc into a lamp.
How it looks on the wall
Switched on, the light glows around the rim and the painted detail reads like a photo of the moon. With the light falling from one side, the same lamp shows only a crescent, with the craters standing out along the edge.
