Two-piece funnel collar with interlocking halves and a bolt flange, 3D printed as a functional part
A large grey funnel collar printed in two halves that key into each other, with a ring of mounting holes in the flange. A functional prototype where the joint and the hole pattern had to fit.

This funnel collar was printed for a customer as a working part, not a display model. It is split into two matching halves, and the post stresses that the halves and the mounting holes needed tight tolerances.
What had to fit
- The joint: each half has stepped keys and slots on its split faces, so the two halves lock into one ring instead of just touching.
- The flange: a wide base flange carries a ring of mounting holes that must line up with the part it bolts to.
- The profile: the inside flares out like a funnel, with grooves and steps on the outside.
How we approach a fit like this
Mating faces on FDM parts are normally given a small clearance in the CAD model: usually about 0.1 mm, and 0.1 to 0.3 mm depending on the material and the printer. That keeps a keyed joint snug without forcing it. The photos show even layer lines on the curved surfaces and clean, round holes in the flange.
