RadGauge-Dual MEGA radius measuring gauge, 3D printed in two colours

Not every print is a model. This RadGauge-Dual MEGA is a workshop tool: it measures the radius of a curved edge or a round part, with a measuring radius of up to 80 mm. PrototypeBD printed it to be used, not displayed.

How it is built

  • A body with angled jaws that sits on the curve;
  • a sliding strip with a millimetre scale from 0 to 80, read against a window marked β€œradius (mm)”;
  • a small gear and a rack-toothed slider among the parts;
  • the numbers and tick marks printed in a contrasting colour, so they cannot peel off like a sticker.

Why it is a good test of a printer

A measuring tool is only useful if it reads true. The sliding parts have to move without play, and the scale markings must be crisp and evenly spaced. The photos show sharp yellow numbers on the green parts, a clean small gear and flat sliding strips in both colour versions.
